THE PTSD GENERATION, VIETNAM

After almost half a century I will return to Southeast Asia and relive my Vietnam experience during the war years. The blog will cover my 1968-1970 years in the military as I revisit a time and place that sculptured my life. Photo's, both then and now, will encompass images of a war ravished penninsula and bring the experience to life.

A historical, spiritual, and emotional journey will include the four key players directly involved in the war in Southeast Asia: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and of course Vietnam. I will travel to key locations involved in the war and try to bring a viewpoint only seen through a soldiers eyes and in doing so I hope to bring a historical account of the Vietnam experience to life.

Followers may post a comment or ask a question pertaining to a story or a historical event. I will attempt to answer all questions to the best of my ability as WIFI and internet availability permits. My itinerary has been planned so as to allow for WIFI and internet stops between extremely remote areas.

The journey will begin after the Monsoon Season in late September when I fly into Bangkok Thailand the hub of Southeast Asia. I will work my way up country into Laos at the northern most point of the original Ho Chi Minh Trail. Crossing the Mekong River on Long Boats I enter what was then North Vietnam in the high mountainous region. Old Hanoi begins the Vietnam leg of the journey followed by key coastal landmarks. Working my way south I enter what was then South Vietnam at the site of the 17th parallel, the original DMZ. Key inland battle sites along with infamous coastal war ports are on my itinerary as I work my way to Ho Chi Minh City formally Saigon. The Mekong River Delta rounds out the South China Sea area of my adventure. Heading west towards the jungle regions of the Vietnam Cambodian border I enter Cambodia on the southern most part of the original Ho Chi Minh Trail. The Killing Fields are next on my way to Phenom Penn the capital of Cambodia. I finish my journey where I started in Bangkok Thailand.

Thank you
Frank Romeo

  6. I know it is 45 years late, but thank you for your service, Frank. I was a young teenager in the late sixties and it was a tumultuous time. Reading how you were treated by Americans makes me cry. Although I never mistreated a soldier, I want to apologize for the inexcusable treatment you endured after the terrible tragedies you suffered as a result of your selfless service to our country. (As we now acknowledge, it doesn't matter whether or not we agree with the war.) All of our military should be lauded for their service. I am truly sorry for your suffering and I hope that somehow, someway, I can help make it just a little bit better for you.
