ASHVILLE

Asheville North Carolina, founded shortly after the American Revolution, boasts a population of 83,000 and is the largest city in western NC. In fact it's the eleventh largest in the state. Considered the Art Mecca of the Blue Ridge Mountains it is home to The University of North Carolina at Asheville. Nestled in the heart of The Appalachian Mountains it sits at an elevation of 2,100 feet and is surrounded by quaint little towns in one of the most picturesque area's of the country. One such town is Mars Hill.

I left Charleston after breakfast and was in Mars Hill by lunchtime in a rustic log cabin clinging to a mountainside. Once again family, the mainstay of my existence, becomes part of my journey and once again it's reunion time. My daughters Marie, the owner of the house, and Katie, along with their spouses, welcome me into their mountain-man world. Just outside Asheville, Mars Hill is a sleepy mountainside town of farm animals, crops, and houses buried deep in the Smokey Mountains. We ate, drank, hiked, and explored the high country of North Carolina together. The laughter and joy echoed throughout the countryside. Please enjoy my children and I Appalachian style.
